Intent, Implementation and Impact

Intent

At Harriers Banbury Academy, our Music curriculum engages and inspires pupils to provide them with the knowledge and skills to increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. We hope to foster a lifelong love for music; exposing our pupils to diverse musical experiences and igniting their passion for the subject. By listening and responding to different musical styles, finding their voices as singers, performers and as composers, we will enable them to become confident and reflective musicians.

The aims of our Music curriculum are to develop pupils who can:

• Sing and use their voices, creating and composing music on their own and with others.
• Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated.
• Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions.

Implementation

The Harriers Banbury Academy Music curriculum follows a hybrid music scheme, incorporating the guidance of the Model Music Curriculum into our provision. We use resources from BBC Ten Pieces, Charanga and instrument units to engage and teach our pupils in an exciting way. These weekly lessons embed the pupils’ knowledge across the music curriculum; understanding music, listening, singing, notation, playing instruments, composition, improvisation and performance.

These fundamental strands of the music curriculum are embedded at Harriers Banbury Academy. These include; weekly classroom music lessons, singing in assembly, concerts, performances, workshops and instrument lessons. The pupils particularly get the opportunity to use percussion instruments, recorders, glockenspiels and ukuleles.

Impact

At Harriers Banbury Academy, we aim to have a positive impact on our student’s musical development, well-being and broader educational outcomes. Our pupils demonstrate growing confidence, competence and enthusiasm for music. They also develop a strong sense of musical identity and a lifelong appreciation for music.

The impact of our Music curriculum extends beyond the subject itself. It provides our pupils with transferable skills; such as teamwork, self-expression and problem-solving, positively impacting their academic achievement and personal development.

We actively monitor and evaluate the impact of our Music curriculum through regular recordings, pupil voice, observations and tracking pupils’ progress over time. This information informs our ongoing curriculum development, allowing us to continually improve and refine our music provision.

Our Music curriculum provides our pupils with a rich musical education that nurtures their passion for music, equips them with essential musical skills and enhances their personal development.
